Fluoride is a powerful mineral that plays a crucial role in keeping teeth strong and cavity-free. For pediatric patients, using fluoride toothpaste is an essential part of maintaining excellent oral health and preventing tooth decay. Here’s why fluoride toothpaste should be a staple in your child’s daily oral care routine.

How Does Fluoride Help Protect Teeth?

Fluoride strengthens tooth enamel, making it more resistant to acid attacks from plaque, bacteria, and sugary foods. It also helps to remineralize weakened areas of the teeth, reversing early signs of decay before cavities can form.

Benefits of Fluoride Toothpaste for Children

  • Prevents Cavities: Tooth decay is one of the most common chronic childhood diseases. Fluoride toothpaste helps protect against cavities by fortifying enamel and reducing the harmful effects of acids in the mouth.
  • Supports Developing Teeth: As children’s teeth grow, they need extra protection to stay strong and healthy. Fluoride helps ensure proper enamel development, reducing the risk of future dental problems.
  • Reduces Sensitivity: Some children experience tooth sensitivity, especially as their teeth develop. Fluoride toothpaste can help strengthen enamel, reducing discomfort caused by temperature changes and acidic foods.
  • Establishes Lifelong Healthy Habits: Introducing fluoride toothpaste early helps children develop proper oral hygiene habits that will benefit them throughout their lives. Regular use of fluoride toothpaste encourages brushing and prevents long-term dental issues.

How to Use Fluoride Toothpaste Safely

  • For children under three: Use a smear-sized amount (about the size of a grain of rice)
  • For children ages three to six: Use a pea-sized amount and encourage spitting after brushing. Children of any age can use adult of children’s toothpaste. However the toothpaste must have fluoride in it and the correct size must be used.
  • Supervise brushing: Until your child can brush independently, make sure they are using the right amount of toothpaste and brushing properly.

Choosing the Right Fluoride Toothpaste

A tube of toothpaste is next to a toothbrush with toothpaste on it.

Look for a toothpaste with the American Dental Association (ADA) Seal of Acceptance, ensuring it contains the right amount of fluoride for cavity protection. Additionally, pick a child-friendly flavor to make brushing a fun and enjoyable experience. There are three toothpaste brands we recommend at Cavity Detective Pediatric Dentistry.

We only recommend Crest, Colgate or Made By Dentists toothpaste brands. We recommend against using Toms, Oraljel, Hello and Dr. Brown’s toothpaste brands. Too often we see that our patient’s that use these brands have frequent cavities, bacteria recalls (Toms toothpaste 11/2024), and they are the most expensive!
